Burgers at Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill

In Burger Porn, Size Doesn’t Matter. Really.

Among food bloggers and foodies, in general, there has been a trend lately of photographing, eating and labeling giant Napoleonic presentations of burgers as “Burger Porn.”  At Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill, Adair Family Restaurants’ Gary Adair has judiciously steered clear of the temptation to follow this trend and is producing burgers that prove that “Size doesn’t matter.” Not that the burgers we tried on a Saturday lunch at the Weslayan location weren’t big.  They were big… but they were grandiose in flavor and creativity… and one person could eat one of them without help.

Sally and I and a foodie friend each ordered a different burger and a spare chicken sandwich and allowed Skeeter’s to prove that Mesquite-grilled burgers are way up there in flavor profile and (for many of us) leave those grease-soaked griddled burgers from many of Houston’s top burger joints behind.

Anniversary Burger

As Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, they have up-sized their classic burger from 1/3 pound of chuck to 1/2 pound… added a Mexican mix of melted cheeses and labeled it as the Anniversary Burger (They still have their Classic 1/3 pound of beef Skeeter’s Burger). This is a classic Texas-style burger with plenty of meat… plenty of juice… an upgraded cheese and plenty of smoky flavor.

Buffalo Burger

The hands-down favorite of all three of us was the Buffalo Burger. The Buffalo Burger has 1/2 pound (it looked like a half-pound, but the menu doesn’t brag about the weight of the patty) of lean buffalo meat and still relatively juicy due, also, to the addition of pesto mayonnaise and bleu cheese.

Lean Turkey Burger

A big surprise (to me) was the Lean Turkey Burger. I expected it to be dry and in need of iced tea to swallow it.  Not the case.  It was moist and loaded with the standard no-frills condiments and veggies (lettuce, tomato and red onion).

Grilled Chicken Sandwich

The Grilled Chicken Sandwich was an order for Sally to take home, but was consumed by all of us before it needed a doggie bag.  It was a smoky Mesquite-grilled tender skinless/boneless chicken breast that was dressed with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato.

We were all impressed with these creative non-designer (satisfying) burgers and agreed that we’ll be back for ’em.

  1. Jack, I've dined at Skeeter's several times, and never found the burgers to be memorable. With your recommendation, perhaps it's time for me to try 'em again. Nice article, sir.
